How come managers aren't allowed to give updates on coworkers?

Honestly, I feel like every place and state is different on this matter. And this is both literally and figuratively speaking: What if a coworker ends up in a hospital? and let's say managers receive an update about that particular coworker, how come they're not allowed to update the rest of the coworkers on the status of the coworker who was in the hospital whether it be for one night or even a few days? Honestly, I've been trying to research information on that, but haven't found much.

    Someone's medical information is private and there are reasons a worker might want to update a manager but not have that info passed on to the rest of the staffers. You'll find that HIPAA laws are federal and don't really differ that much between states.

    The relevant law is actually the same in all states.

    In PRACTICE, very few managers even know WHAT is allowed and many chose to err on the side of never saying anything even close to the line.

    The law most BELIEVE applies is HIPAA, which prohibits dislosing medical information without the patient's consent.

    @ Michael  Management is not allowed to give out health information to other people without the authorization of the employee getting medical treatment.  

    If you are in the USA then the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) protects the privacy of people with regard to health and medical issues.  It is NOT about "company policy" as other answers claim.  If the person in question does not want you to be "updated" then you are not supposed to get the information. If they do want you to be told about their status then you can be told.  It is up to them and not up to management at the company or organization that employs them.

      HIPPA doesn't apply to the information that a manager might give out. It does apply to the information that a manager might get. i.e. the hospital won't tell a manager the employees condition, but HIPPA allows the manager to pass on whatever they might learn. Different law might apply.

    It's nobodies business if the person wants to discuss with coworkers when they get back to work that's up to them, many businesses will send flowers and gifts to the individual on behalf of everyone at work
