    here are the rules that apply

    (f + g)' = f' + g' 

    derivative of a sum is the derivative of each. 

    Thus we can do each term separately 

    k' = 0 

    derivative of a constant is 0

    (kf)' = kf'

    the constant multiplier stays unchanged

    power rule 

    if f(x) = x^n 

    f'(x^n) = nx^(n–1) 

    y = 8x⁹ – 5x² – 18

    y' = 9•8x⁹⁻¹ – 2•5x²⁻¹ – 0

    y' = 72x⁸ – 10x
