What percentage of earthquakes and volcanoes have occurred on or near plate boundaries?

    Earthquakes - Over 90%, according to the USGS.

    Volcanoes - 99%*

    *Technically, Iceland doesn't count, as it's actually the result of a hotspot, not the spreading of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The ridge just allows the hotspot to grow a large island very quickly.

      Hotspots happen when a mantle plume forces molten rock upward into a plate. They occur independently of plate boundaries. Iceland just happens to be on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but it is actually the result of a hotspot.
