What's the point of high school if they don't teach you anything useful besides college readiness?

A good high school would hopefully have some kind of vocational training one could take as a prep for going straight into the work world. But if you're in the US we've gotten pretty bad at this and things like shop class and such have been the first to go under funding cuts. However, just having that high school diploma makes all the difference in you being marginally employable or not employable at all. However, a GED serves the same purpose...that being to get you a minimum wage job.

That's the most important thing they SHOULD teach you.  What you learn in college will support and sustain you and your family for the rest of your life.

You should be able to do that without a college degree.

Your "if" is the answer.  Your IF is wrong.

But that's exactly the value of HS, to get you qualified to go to college and earn the big bucks when you graduate from college. If you cannot hack the college prep courses in HS and or choose not to take college prep, what you learn in HS will prepare you to qualify for and hold manual labor blue collar jobs...like auto mechanic or electrician.

Did you know what you wanted to be for the rest of your life when you were 12?

Assuming not, 12 yo's are not educated yet in what to do for work, they are teaching knowledge in different fields so in the future they can make an educated choice on what to do.. Besides you are learning life needed skills not skills just for college

To get ready for college is all that it basically is.

Most of that stuff is very useful but if you lack the capacity to see that you should drop out and begin your career as a fast food burger flipper. Don't worry about missing your friends. The ones that go on to college will be your boss in a few years so you can see them then and ask for a raise for "old times sake".
