Why is my dog eating dirt?

Don't judge me for this, but I have been leaving my dog tethered outside all day and all night for about a week now. He is a 6 year old Doberman/Staffordshire mix. I leave him outside to toughen him up so that he goes after burglars.

Lately, I've noticed him eating dirt. I have no idea what the cause of this is. Why is he doing it?

    Why because he's bored.

What you are doing is animal cruelty. The dog is doing it out if starvation.

As a non-human animal myself, I'm deeply appalled.
