British, especially Scottish, are better soldiers wheras Belgian refugees can do works in order to support the front lines.

In 1914 there was NO CONSCRIPTION. There was an army of VOLUNTEERS, like my grandfather. He and his friends were neither poor nor destitute, they were the educated working classes and patriots.

I'm not sure the British soldiers were necessarily poor and destitute but I'm wondering if any of the male refugees went to back to mainland Europe to join them in fighting the Germans. Like the Poles did in WW2, some even forming a Polish RAF squadron.
