Probably due to sources like anime or video games. So people would gravitate toward a culture or language that has more relevance to them.

    Do they?

Japanese is one language, and not tonal. large parts are written in syllabaries

Chinese is one (and a half) written language, but several dozen spoken ones - all tonal, and written in symbols that don't tell you anything about the pronunciation.

Japanese is considered to be even more challenging though

Most Americans only speak English...they can't even master Spanish, let alone an oriental language.

Although it is not clear that "most" Americans prefer the Japanese language, some of us have undoubtedly been influenced by the many high-quality Japanese films that we have seen over the years.

Because it's not "tonal" in nature.
