Could water put out lava in the same way it puts out fire? ?

Not exactly. The lava would harden to rock once cooled enough, and you'd need plenty of more water than what you would think would be suitable for fire.

If it did, they'd have pumps pouring seawater on Kilauea. Even if it did work, it would cause even worse problems.
Suppose they poured tons of seawater on Kilauea? What would happen? The lava would cool off, harden, and stop flowing. The problem is, the magma chamber is still sending fresh lava to the surface. (Magma is underground; when it reaches the surface, it's called lava.) The hardened lava would be just like a cork, plugging up the volcanic cone; but the lava is still coming from beneath. Pouring water on the top would only be a temporary delay (if it works at all). Eventually, the pressure would build up, and the mountain would explode. This would be even worse than if you hadn't tried water at all.
This is more or less what happened to Krakatoa (August 27, 1883). It started erupting a few months earlier, then stopped. But that wasn't the end of it. The volcano was blocked by rock and slow-flowing lava. The pressure built up so high, the entire island blew up. This generated a tsunami that killed 36,000 people, and generated the loudest noise ever heard by man.

It happens all the time in Hawaii as lava flows into the ocean.

Water would take away a lot of heat energy, nothing to put out. Make it hotter or colder.

Lava is not burning but cold water (or hot water) will cause the lava to cool and solidify.

"Put out lava"???
Lava is "molten rock." You could cool some lava with water to the point that it solidifies. This happens when lava flows into the ocean. But pouring a bucket of water on lava will vaporize the water.
Someone already has done a rough calculation of the amount of lava which could be cooled with a kilogram of water (1L).
And that's for cooling lava to the boiling point of water.

Yes .. but you'd need A LOT of water to cool it down, rather than ''put it out''
Lava that flows into the sea, for example, is cooled down enough to 'solidify' again.
