    Compare dimensions

    3 feet = 36 inches

    4.5 feet = 54 inches

    36 inches / 4 inches = 9

    54 inches / 6 inches = 9

    The scale factor is 9

    :-

    I think that I too used to say " dilation `` but it should actually be `` dilatation ' ' ! !

    k = 4•5 / 0•5 = 9

    or

    k = 3 / (1/3) = 9

    My Oki (colour laser) and XEROX (B&W) printers do the calculations.

    I just pick the size I want, and submit the image.

    Then they print it out as required.

    It’s 9x. 3 feet = 36 inches.

    4 inch * x = 36x = 9

    4.5 feet = 48 + 6 = 54 inches

    6 * x = 54

    x = 9

    So the 4 x 6 picture needs to be increased by 9 fold.
