How does the criminalization of domestic assault fit into an overall societal trend toward crime?

Is it a trend toward crime or a redefinition of crime? Domestic assault has always existed, but it wasn't considered a crime back when women were considered the property of men. Back then men could whip a horse or whip his wife and it was acceptable because the wife and horse belonged to the man; they were his property. Now we recognize that wives (or girlfriends) are not a man's property and should not be treated that way. Maybe it's similar to the redefinition of autism. As the definition of autism has expanded, so have the number of children who have been diagnosed as being autistic.
