Don't you hate it when people say "Things happen for a reason" when the reason you got dumped was that your GF dumped you for another guy?

If your girlfriend left for another guy consider yourself lucky. She wasn't that into the relationship in the first place if this happened. And now you have the freedom to put yourself out there and meet someone who might like to give you her time and real affection.

You're misinterpreting it.   If your gf dumped you for another guy, obviously this relationship was never meant to be.   People in love don't do this. So, with that being the case, it's in your best interest for this to happen sooner rather than later.  What is you had ended up marrying her, having 2 kids...and THAT's when she decided  you weren't the one?   You may not see it, but be glad it happened now.

That's not what it really means though.

In your case, what it means is that now you are free to find a better girlfriend.

It's something to say when people don't know what to say. it is intended to make you feel better. the implied "reason" is that she was not the one for you and now you are free to meet the one who is.

Yes but really, they don't know what else to say.

Its a completely meaningless comment, but I don't "hate" it.  People say that because they have no idea what else to say, or don't care enough to have a conversation about it.
