Her name was Ernestine Amalie Pauline Rössler. She married twice, taking her husbands name in turn to become Mme Schumann-Heink. After being widowed she married a third time (to her manager) and became a US citizen; she found international fame with Met in New York, and was renowned for her performances of Wagner. She also performed with Richard Strauss, who was supposed to have told his orchestra: "Louder! I can still hear Madame Schumann-Heink!"
