Nobody can answer that question definitively. We weren't there; any evidence was scattered and dissipated by the Big Bang and the subsequent expansion of the universe. We have several cosmological models, but from what we can tell, all of those models "fall apart" (in a mathematical sense) as they get closer and closer to the moment of the Big Bang. So, nobody knows.
IF you take the most popular theories, then the answer is that the question itself has no meaning because TIME didn't start until the BB. That is, if time itself does not exist then the word "before" has no meaning. Which probably tells us that we don't fully understand time, either.

The idea of universe is basically misconstrued. Universe means "All".
The Biblical record of creation indicates "in the Beginning" this beginning refers to the physical cosmos we live in.,and we have no idea when the beginning started.
We live in an observable physical Universe which appear only as a tiny dot in our Creators Domain which is called " Heaven ".

Time is a property of the universe. There was no time before the big bang. The concept of Before makes no sense at that time.

We have no way of knowing... for all intents and purposes, the space *and* time started at the same point - so, we'd have no way to express what came 'before'...

Just a GIANT HOLE.
Until, about a zillion years later, the universe came floating along and set itself in there like something on Tetris.

The question makes no sense. It's like asking what's north of the north pole or below the centre of the Earth.

It would appear -- The Mother Universe .
Or put another way , it appears to be turtles all the way down.

Before the universe is nothingness, from this nothingness, then the first pure energy that can perform work being created and being ignited to be big bang, then came the universe.

We may never know
because time didnt exist so the rules that apply in our universe dont apply before it was made
we all have a creator
