Why is Minneapolis much colder than London, even though London is much further north?

Because Minneapolis has a continental climate, characterized by hot summers and very cold, dry winters. London has a maritime climate and enjoys warmth brought north by the Gulf Stream. This results in mild, wet summers and equally mild winters.

London is much closer to the modifying effects of the ocean, including the warm waters of the Gulf Stream that hit England.

Because Great Britain is right on the ocean, being an island, and is warmed by the Gulf Stream, a very warm current of water that travels up from the Gulf of Mexico.  You might ask the same about Minneapolis and Seattle.
