Where is the best area to stay at in Los Angeles?

I'm visiting Los Angeles in a couple weeks I would like to know where the hot spot areas to stay at are. I'm looking for a young environment full of a great nightlife and bars to hop around to. My price range is anywhere from $300-$475/night.

Check out the beach cities, like Santa Monica or Venice Beach. If its not to far, Manhattan and Hermosa Beach have good night life too.

Someone once said that LA is six suburbs in search of a city. It's VERY spread out. There are only a few areas where there's a concentration of restaurants and bars- Venice Beach is one, and that's a funky, skateboarding crowd. Westwood is more upscale, and you may feel underdressed and under botoxed there, plus the drinks will cost you a week's salary, but it's glamorous.
