You can disengage the parking brake as soon as you get into the driver seat if you want.  There's this thing called the brake pedal, and most vehicles won't shift out of park without it.

Shift to drive before releasing the hand brake.

Start car first then shift into D, then the handbrake is off.

Never driven a automatic but, I'm sure I could work it out while the planes are flying over. ;-)

First put your foot on the brake, then take the hand brake off, then put it in drive.

Shift to drive. One foot depressing the clutch. The second foot on the gas pedal. Slowly release the hand brake while you start to step on the gas and release the clutch pedal at the same time. It takes some coordination.

Apply foot brake, remove park brake, shift to drive, check traffic, drive when clear.

  • While keeping your foot on the brake, release the hand brake and then shift into gear.
