Driving with a failing crankshaft position sensor can be difficult and potentially dangerous. It could lead to long-term vehicle damage and expensive repairs, or even stop the car from working at all.

It converts the up and down motion of the pistons/crank rods to rotary motion that can be used in turn to make the wheels go round and round

The crank turns the pistons which in turn turn the crank which drives the flywheel which works the transmission that delivers power to the wheels. With out a crank the engine could not work at all. Very important part of the engine.

Use your browser(whichever one you are using as Google is not the only Browser being used)
and type into the search bar "how a motor works" You will find neat animations and you see how all the parts work. You will never have to ask again. There may be a voice or a write up at the same time so it is as clear as mud.
