What does a crankshaft do?

It converts the up and down motion of the pistons/crank rods to rotary motion that can be used in turn to make the wheels go round and round

The crank turns the pistons which in turn turn the crank which drives the flywheel which works the transmission that delivers power to the wheels. With out a crank the engine could not work at all. Very important part of the engine.

  SFU Henry, the answer is correct. Only addition would be it can do the same in reverse if we have no specific mechanism in mind.
