If marbles are not made of marble, why are they called marbles?

It's the marbling effect in the jorries.

Well, if you'd thought about it, you might have guessed that many marbles were originally made of marble. They could also be made of clay or other types of stone, or the games associated with them could be played with other objects, like nuts, but the name "marble" stuck.
