If you wanna make just 1 investment that covers the lot then try finding a global index (some times call a tracker) fund that covers them

If more than 1 then the S&P 500 fund covers the top 500 in the US (and ONLY the US- not the world)

the ISHARES 350 UK equity fund covers the top 350 companies in the UK (and ONLY the UK)

(this is just an indication of what they cover- not a recommendation)

just look down the list of index funds that cover each country, or those that cover an area of the world (eg - the far east, europe)

But obviously these funds will only cover the top companies of the area they specialise in  - So its quite possible that the top companies in 1 index may well come way down the list of the top companies in the world when compared with companies in another index

Its could therefore be quite possible that the companies in the S&P 500 ARE the top 500 companies in the world but I very much doubt it- There are a few non-US banks that have a capitalisation far higher than most US companies, and both BMW and Volkswagen have a huge capitalisation)

ONLY way you could find out would to be to look at index funds for other countries and compare company capitalisation

yes, s&p 500 index fund. People have been doing it for a very long time.

FNILX is a fidelity no fee mutual fund that mimics the s&p 500 without calling it that. (Because calling it that involves paying a fee)

    A few issues here.

    1. They arent all on the same exchanges...so you'd need to be a savvy investor.

    2. They arent all public...so you couldnt invest in them all anyway (no stocks).

    3. You can just buy a mutual fund that invests in the S&P 500...which are the 500 most valuable stocks (meaning market cap of the list, not the individual stock price), but you are limited in this case to mostly US companies.

Yes, for most of them , you can purchase publicly traded stocks and/or invest in a mutual fund that carries those stocks

Yes.  The easiest way would be by buying into a mutual fund that does that, not unlike how people buy into mutual funds that proportionally invest in the S&P 500 so that the mutual fund performs exactly the same as the S&P 500.
