Define "we" and I'll tell you. In some places everyone does have a place to stay. But these places generally have small populations and plenty of natural resources to fund this kind of social safety net.

Everyone should have access to housing and all their basic needs met. We are heading in that direction now. Mechanization will soon take over most jobs.

The next problem will be to make sure that people 'earn' their living through continuing education or some social interactions and services.

Getting paid for doing nothing is an unhealthy way to live as it leads to feelings of guilt and entitlement.

because that would be communist.  Where would usury-rent take place if there were no (artificial) shortage of housing? How would "jobcreators" get richer in their sleep?

Because the governments all over the world run by spoilt rich idiots think I have got all this money so why hasn't everyone else?

The people in power simply don't care about those in poverty as they know they are never going to vote for them.

If you are homeless and penniless then you are invisible as far as governments go. You are a problem they do not recognise and are not prepared to address.

Oh how nice of you to offer to pay for a whole house for someone else! That's why.

It's not a question of "why can't we",, of course we can. It's a question of "why won't we".

    We can.

Unfortunately, everything in the U.S. costs money. Our tax money.

Otherwise, I'd much prefer everyone off the streets.

People like to make claims about limited resources, but truthfully we could easily house and feed everyone on the planet if we were so inclined.  But even limiting the conversation to the United States, economists have said for a long while that it would save the US economy enormous sums if he simply housed all the homeless rather than letting them sleep on the streets.

But, quite sadly, most people cannot stand the idea of someone receiving for free what they had to work for.  And so the homeless remain homeless, and the people who's fault that is continue to gripe.
