A monitor is a display,,a display is a monitor. Power consumption depends on what a given monitor/display requires.

It uses MORE power, sir, as your external monitor would need power as well as the laptop.

It takes less power to drive an external monitor because an external monitor has its own power source. You can run your laptop on battery significantly longer if you're using an external monitor or projector because they have their own power source and don't depend on the battery inside your laptop.

Depends if the poster is talking about Total Power Usage or only "Laptop Power Usage". The way the question is phrased makes it unclear what it meant.
