What is this coin?  US 1973 half dollar with 1967 One Penny coin inside?

Half dollar split open and the penny was inside.

Novelty item. If a genuine JFK half dollar was used, then the British penny had to be milled down, because the penny is slightly larger than the half dollar. In either case, you have a face value half dollar and the most common date of the QE II large pennies, so the undamaged coins, in and of themselves, are worth maybe slightly over a dollar. Damaged, they have no value. The sum of the parts as a novelty is worth more than the coins. How much depends on how badly someone wants it.

It's not an official US coin, it's something that someone put together.

It is an Espionage Coin. The Russians liked to use Nickles.

Microfilm was concealed in them. Then passed on to beggars, or store clerks (agents) to then be delivered to the embassy or Handler.
