Is unplugging the power strip from the wall or is it the same as just turning the switch off?

I mean in the sense of being more eco friendly?

Once something electrical is plugged in it is drawing electrical current at all times. Turning off the switch doesn't stop the electricity. But unplugging the cord from the outlet stops the flow of electricity. Today's flat screen tvs are huge electricity consumers, even when turned off. You must unplug it to reduce electric consumption.

some say that power escapes, but anything that has a pilot light will use power

Turning off is the same as unplugging it- that's the whole point of the power strips.

All electronics use a small amount of power to standby. Disruption of power causes the equipment to have to reset. Best not to turn it off. The power used is usually less than a couple watts.

usage depends on what's connected some things use a suprising amount of power in stand-by.  Not like an A/C,  but 10 or 15 watts, 24/7.
