The Special Olympics is for individuals with intellectual disabilities, whereas the Paralympics is generally for athletes with any disability, including physical, and only at an elite level.

  • Special Olympics are for athletes with developmental/mental disabilities. Paralympics are for athletes with physical disabilities. Paralympics are recognised by the the IOC; bids for hosting Winter/Summer Olympics include Paralympics. Special Olympics have no relationship with the IOC and run independently.
