Why can we not simply forbid gasoline and diesel cars and enforce electric cars, as a strong measure to solve the environmental crisis?

So long as the population keeps growing, so will all earth's problems.

Source(s): With that increase in demand for electricity, coal burning power plants will be working overtime.

Until all electricity is sourced from non coal burning facilities then it is not really a viable alternative to replace all vehicles with electric models. The city areas may have cleaner air with electric cars but give a thought to those living near the additional coal fired power stations. A move towards green recycled energy (wind, solar, tidal, thermal etc.) is happening in many countries, but at the same time we have south-eastern countries burning their rainforests to grow western countries supply of pine sugar, at an ever growing rate. China is also planning new coal fired power stations to meet their demand for power also. It is not such an easy solution to solve the environmental crisis. If it was only petrol and diesel vehicles, and the oil companies not pushing their agendas, then it would be much easier of course, but that is only one small aspect of the equation.

That would just make things worse. We dont have an efficient way of disposing of the lithium ion batteries

The fact is a number of countries already plan to halt new gasoline car sales, manufacturer’s are already shifting to electric cars in preparation for this. VW plan to have a range of such vehicles within the next 3 years, others like Audi, Jaguar, Mini and Kia have vehicles out now and plan more soon.

Virtually no gasoline or diesel is used to make significant amounts of electricity.

Friend at this point in time it still takes gasoline and Diesel and coal to generate electricity there simply isn't enough thermoelectric power out there to meet the needs or nuclear power or solar power. if we were getting all of our electricity from Green sources I'd say yep band cars that use fossil fuel but it's no good to have electric cars when you have to have fossil fuel to make the electricity you're not making any progress you're just making a more expensive car.

Sorry, that’s simply not true, because an electric motor is far more efficient, even if the charging source is fossil fuel powered, the emmisons are far lower, ~25%

For one thing, there isn't remotely enough infrastructure to support so many e-cars at this time.

I think this is part of the plan. Everyone has an EV, not electricity to run them, cheap solution to congestion.
