Do we say I have flu or I have the flu?

"The flu." No real reason, but "I have bronchitis" "I have a cold" "I have the flu."

In this example, "the" is necessary.

Both versions are heard in conversation in Britain. If without "the" more likely as "I've got flu".

Short for influenza, a virus, therefore I have the flu (virus) or I have ‘a’ flu virus. That would be my take.
