Will a hernia heal on its own ?

I was born with a hernia. I'm it was a few inches above my belly button and was visibley pushing on the skin (it was a lighter coloured patch die to a small amount of pressure) will I was about 11 (roughtly).I'm now 19 and have no problems, I've done manual labour ect. But if my girlfriend rests her arm on my stomach it makes me feel a little bit unwell and I'm not sure if the hole ever actually healed fully or if it's a physiological thing because it's the same place where the hernia was. I feel very sick at the thought of being cut open though so would prefer not to have surgery but it's a bit of a worry when it happens

Hernia's do not heal and heavy lifting can make it get worse.

You really should have it checked out. Hernias can cause significant problems internally. The surgery is routine these days and of the 'keyhole' type.
