It was the great Imperial Adventure. Those with empires saw an opportunity to get there hands on other people's colonies. It was the logical extension of the capabilities ushered in by the Industrial Revolution, applied to warfare. Of course it wasn't quite the turkey shoot (apart from the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, pun intended) that they expected. Notable too for the system of overt and covert alliances that propelled the entire continent into warfare with a matter of weeks, which few predicted.
