Why do people follow football games with so much interest? going to games with their friends? it is like a social activity?

If you found out that someone who you thought was a pretty deep thinking person liked to watch foot ball games, would that not be like finding out that they like something like "Country music" or something really stupid? why or why not?

Listening to sports talk on talk radio, with fans calling the station to air their opinions, you get the impression that the sports fan is not just living a fantasy life of being a player. He's a theorist watching his theories being confirmed or debunked. It's much the same as intellectuals arguing about science and philosophy. What's appealing about sports, as opposed to philosophy, is that proof is there on the playing field, questions are resolved.
