Are trade-ins more of a marketing scheme or a mass transportation scheme?

They are a service because many people dont want to deal with selling their old car. Not a "scheme".

Neither. It is just another way for a car dealership to make a profit. They pay only what the wholesale value of the trade-in is worth Then they sell it as a used vehicle charging the retail value. They make most close to the same amount of profit selling those trade-ins as they do selling new cars.

Ben; What is the definition of mass transportation? Any kind of transportation system in which large numbers of people are carried within a single vehicle or combination of vehicles. I don't see how used cars fits within that definition.
