Rock mechanics?

A rock falls to earth from approximately 10,000m above the ground, starting from rest, without air resistance. What would the slope of the total mechanical energy look like? What would the slope of the kinetic energy look like? (eg. flat, increasing, decreasing, constant)

    The total mechanical energy would be flat. As the potential energy decreases, the kinetic energy increases, and this keeps the mechanical energy at a constant value.

    Kinetic energy would be increasing. The potential energy is turning into kinetic.

    HOW is the rock going to fall from 10000 m above the ground. Where is the rock right now?

    There is nowhere for the rock to BE such that it falls this distance.

    However without air resistance there is no loss of mechanical energy so the total mechanical energy is a constant ( straight horizontal line).

    The graph of kinetic energy would be increasing and of potential energy decreasing.

    The sum of the two is the total mechanical energy which is not changing.

    The shape of the graph depends on whether you plot energy against TIME or energy against DISTANCE FALLEN.

    The fall would be constant as with everything

    Related to gravity but the size of the rock or

    Asteroid could cause a huge blast of dirt with

    Toxic material like the one the covered the earth

    And killed all the dinosaurs. I'm not exactly

    Sure how energy builds into that hyper blast

    Of atomic size or how big the rock or asteroid

    Was that wiped out our dinosaurs.

    flat (conservation of energy)

    What would the slope of the kinetic energy look like?

    increasing Vs time (GPE becomes KE)
