How does a pathologist or whatever test blood, meaning do they use a microscope or some machine to test for diseases?

There's a variety of clinical laboratory professionals from pathologist, clinical laboratory scientist, medical technicians and phlebotomists.
What they are able to do is governed by the license they hold. When it comes to doing testing depending on the test that is ordered then a microscope will be used or depending on the test a simply device like a throw away pregnancy test kit can be used. For more complex and complicated testing then much more sophisticated instrumentation is used.
