    That's an easy one as you can just work back through it, undoing one stage of the calculation at a time:

    4 (x-5) +3 = 31

    4 (x-5) = 28

    x-5 = 7

    x = 12

    I don't know what the technique is called today. I learned how over 50 years ago.
