US Law. What is the difference in the penalty for stealing a car versus the penalty for stealing a Police Car? In your area?

There is no US law, each state is responsible for creating their own. In my state, the penalty is the same but the if you take a police car the chances of receiving a sentence closer to the max is greater.

Not just because it is a police car, but because it would effect the officer's ability to do his job which could put others at risk.

Theft of government property is added as a charge.

The difference in whether it's a misdemeanor or a felony is contingent upon the value of what was stolen. If you steal a cop car that's worth $15K, it's' considered high value, and therefore it rises to grand larceny.

So in addition to grand theft auto, you're also charged with felony theft of government property.
