# suppose you purchase 3 shirts and a hat. the hat cost 19.75 and you spend 56.50 in all how much does each shirt cost?

3x + y = 56.50  .... this is your equation

3x + 19.75 = 56.50

subtract 19.75 from both sides

3x = 36.75

divide both sides by 3

x = 12.25

each shirt costs \$12.25
