my mom goes to this japanese christian church where this guy gave a talk about his past with the yakuza, this wasn't over a decade ago.
of course... "god" fixed him up and now he does no more of that stuff

Absolutely, but their numbers have been declining slowly in recent years. They just don't really do stuff out in the open. They still engage in drug trafficking and have their hands deep in Japan's sex industry for sure, but a lot of them also make money through loan sharking or protection rackets.
The more successful ones tend to try to "go clean" and start legitimate businesses, often in the finance or property sectors.

Of course. When there’s money to be made, you can bet that organized crimes will be involved.
They’re not as big as it used to be. I’m not even sure if it’s as feared as it used to be. A white guy travels around the world to get tattoos done by selective groups like the yakuza or Samoan tribes. The yakuza actually gave him a tattoo after he ate dog meat.

Yes. Yakuza are regarded as semi-legitimate organizations. They help with disaster relief work and officially forbid their members from engaging in drug trafficking.
