    Unclear yet.

For people who aren't familiar, Operation Crossfire Hurricane was an FBI counterintelligence operation looking at the extent of Russian intelligence penetration of the 2016 campaign of Donald Trump. The origins of the investigation go back to May 2016. A young Trump campaign foreign policy adviser named George Papadopolous was in London and ended up having drinks with Alexander Downer, the Australian ambassador to the UK. During the conversation, Papadopolous told Downer that the Russians had an extensive trove of emails which they had stolen from Hillary Clinton. At the time this didn't seem to mean anything. However, on July 22nd, Wikileaks, a Russian front organization, released a large batch of emails which it had stolen from the Democratic party (not Hillary Clinton personally or the Clinton campaing, but close enough). The Australians realized that this Trump campaign worker had known about the hack weeks before it was publicly known to have occurred, and that seemingly the only way he could have known was if he had gotten that information from the Russians. On July 26th, they informed their American counterparts that the Russians may have had a mole inside the Trump campaign. Five days later, on July 31st, the FBI launched Operation Crossfire Hurricane (named after a Rolling Stones lyric) to investigate the extent of Russian infiltration of the campaign.

In terms of consequences I don't know how much there has been. Perhaps the biggest consequence is something that didn't happen: the American people didn't learn about the investigation until after Trump was elected. Out of context this isn't so bad, but in context it is. That's because the FBI announced, a week and a half before the election, that they were reopening the case of Hillary Clinton's emails. The contrast is striking. While the FBI was extremely public about their investigation into Clinton and her email use there was not a peep about the fact that they were investigating whether high level Trump campaign officials had been compromised by Russia, the very country which was attacking America's election.

Yet to happen - probably the impeachment of Donald Trump - that'll make Jack Flash Jump.
