Is it absolutely necessary that because you're old you must be grumpy and short on patience?

My father is well into his 70s and ever since he turned 60 he's been gradually more unpleasant when he's frustrated. He has less empathy for other people he disagrees with and today he told a security guard to shut up an d yelled at her when it was his own fault that he blocked traffic. I've just been told that "well, he's old" old people get grumpy, but there's gotta be more to it than that

Maybe he has early dementia? Or has suffered a minor stroke? Both can change personalities. I'm old and full of fun.
