What did Africa offer in return for the spices, tapestries and glass beads of China, Europe, and the Muslim world?

Ivory, gold, leopard and lion skins, exotic tropical woods, coconut, chocolate, exotic birds (especially parrots), monkeys as pets, and, of course, slaves.

I know you're fishing for "slaves," but you know what else? GOLD, other spices such as grains of paradise, ivory, ebony, and rice. Here's an interesting aside, rice was independently domesticated twice, once in SE Asia and once in West Africa. The golden rice of south Carolina originated in Africa. The stuff grown today is a hybrid with SE Asian varieties but Charleston built its fortune on African rice grown with African know-how.
