Can police collect my information after calling them/ or someone having them called?

The police told me straight to my face that I had to give him my name, DOB.

Update:

After someone called the police on me (my company , actually. Because the tow guy had his car.)

The police told me I needed to give it over.

Update 2:

This isnt the first time they demanded ID. One time was when I called the police on theft, and this time someone called the police on my company.

Yes, the Police can ask for ID - why won't you disclose your identity if your acts are justifiable?

If you are suspected of committing an illegal act, they can demand ID.
