Is the Rinse Cycle just the Wash Cycle without detergent? Or is there something else happening.?

That is basically what the rinse cycle is. Very similar to what you do with hand washing. In the wash cycle you are using the detergent and water to loosen and remove the dirt. In the rinse cycle you are trying to remove any detergent still in the fabric as well as any residual dirt.

The rinse cycle rinses with plain water. The detergent has been pumped away.
