Maine is a very popular summer vacation destination, the state motto is Vacationland, which the locals have affectionately reworded as Taxationland, but I digress. Just don't try and drive down to Boston on a Sunday afternoon in August, worst traffic evah.
Beaches in Maine are primarily south of Casco Bay. Old Orchard Beach, Biddeford Pool, Ogunquit, Kennebunk beaches, Kennebunkport beachs (known as Goose Rocks), Wells beach and York Beach are the main (pun intended) beaches. On the other side of Casco Bay the coastline is rocky for the most part. So Casco Bay to the Canadian boarder = very limited if any beaches.
Summer in Maine is very short however, it officially starts on Memorial Day, but doesn't really get going until July. The major tourist push starts happening in late June to the first week of July. On Labor Day most of the tourist spots roll up the sidewalks and get the snow blowers ready.
There are many beautiful lakes in Maine. Sebago Lake (of Sebago shoe fame) and Moosehead Lake being two of the larger ones.
I somewhat disagree with the post about temperatures. The water temperatures in the lakes can be quite warm in the summer, certainly well into the 70 degree range. Most of the lakes are very comfortable to swim in. However the ocean water can be a bit nippy, it's rare for it to get past the 70 degree mark, mostly it hovers around 60-65 degrees. If you want warmer ocean water go to the south side of Cape Cod, every place north of Cape Cod is very cool to cold. The air temperatures in the summer can get quite warm as well, specially the last few years. Not uncommon to have temps in the 90s for days on end.
My favorite time in Maine is the fall, September into mid-October. The weather is delightful, the trees are changing colors and you've got the whole harvest thing happening. Might not be a great time to go to the beach, but it's a great time if you want to go places like Kennebunkport, Portland, Bar Harbor (Acadia). The days are warm and the nights are cool and crisp.Source(s): Lived in Maine/New Hampshire for long time.

Maine is beautiful in the summer. However, be aware that it has much cooler summer temperatures than areas farther south, so hanging out at the beach and lakes may not be the same experience. The water tends to be especially cold throughout most of the summer.
