Why haven't we colonized Mars yet?
- Gray BoldLv 71 month agoBest Answer
Mars offers distinct challenges to colonization. First, it has an extremely weak magnetic field. On Earth, the magnetic field, which is generated by the dynamo effect of the Earth’s core, protects life from solar radiation. Without such an effective magnetic field, colonizers would be forced to live underground or in protected shelters, and to constantly wear a protective suit when outside. The gravity on Mars is only 38 percent of what it is on Earth. Just as weightlessness has a negative effect on the human body, so would this weak gravity. Atmospheric pressure is weaker on Mars than on Earth. Winds on Mars can reach speeds of 400 kilometers (248 miles) per hour. Dust storms are frequent, and some storms can cover the entire planet. Lastly is the lack of oxygen. The current atmosphere consists of 95 percent carbon dioxide, 3 percent nitrogen, 1.6 percent argon, and only trace amounts of oxygen and water.

A better question is why do we want to go there at all. Scientists insist we can terraform it to suit our needs, yet we don’t want go through the hassle of restoring our own ecosystem. First things first, I always say.

Because nobody's even been there yet. Do you realise how many problems with just getting there that there are to solve?

We haven't even "colonized" Antarctica for the long term yet.

We're not ready. While we have plans and ideas of how to *get* to Mars, we don't know how to land heavy vehicles as yet.

Because our technology hasn’t advanced enough for us to do so and Mars isn’t stable enough to support life like Earth itself does.
