What reasons would The United States have for not wanting European influence in Cuba?

Starting with the Monroe Doctrine (1823), the US does not want colonization or undue influence from other powers in the Western Hemisphere. That's about US security concerns; the US would not like Mexico to be a puppet state of Iran, as an example. A second reason is geography. Cuba lays across the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico. An serious hostile force stemming from Cuba could easily blockade the Gulf (Cuba on its own is no threat). What the United States would prefer, in the long run, is for Cuba to become the 51st state of the union.

Nobody gets to bully Cuba except the USA
