If you have a shaft and a bearing which tool would you need to ensure that the bearing would fit the shaft?

A micrometer, or, actually 2 micrometers. An inside micrometer for the bearing inner diameter and an outside micrometer for the shaft OD.

If a caged bearing, some sort of combination calipers to measure ID of bearing, OD of shaft. Might have to turn shaft by hand in a lathe with dial indicator to verify the journal is true and not tapered
If a sleeve or split, like an automobile rod bearing, PlastiGage.
