In the 60's they wanted anyone who could point a gun and pull the trigger. There was a draft going on and MANY who could not even read were drafted as the RICH LIKE MOST POLITICIANS KIDS were in school, getting ready to go into politics and got DADDY with his big bucks to pay to keep them out. TO MANY HIDE IN SCHOOL and got student deferments and stayed in school for 10 years taking any BS CLASS they could get.

because liberals started a war then found out that liberals themselves would do anything not to have to fight in the war they started

so they started drafting mentally handicapped people to go fight their war

If it "does not make no sense" then clearly you're saying it does make sense.

    A: its a movie

B: during the Vietnam era, draftees were held to lower standards as they were perceived as cannon fodder.  no real skills required other than being able to shoot a weapon  in the vague direction of the enemy

For starters, it was a movie.

Besides that, it was set during Vietnam. Standards were a bit loser back then. They still had the "Army or jail" program then.

Hell, besides that, he went to college. Why don't you ask how he got into college?

Also, maybe they just didn't include the scenes of mama getting him into college and the Army like she got him into school.

The draft was unpopular and to keep it to a minimum they had very loose standards for volunteers. FYI, in Vietnam most of the troops were volunteers, somewhere around 60%. Contrast that to WW II where most were drafted. It is a bit ironic that WW II vets get called heroes and of the greatest generation of Americans when most were drafted and on the flip side Vietnam vets got treated like dirt even though most were volunteers.

No one with an IQ of 75 would pass the ASVAB high enough to qualify
