How should I begin practicing cartwheels and backflips?

I’d very much like to be able to do both of these. 

What should I do to work toward these?Where should I practice at first? Is flexibility important for this, and what stretches should I do to help? How long does it usually take to learn these?

    Join a Gym that teaches Gymnastics, you'll get taught by qualified instructors and have somewhere soft to land on.
