    It adds an exponent to the equation.

    Example: 8^3.

    It is the caret symbol. It signifies the root of a quantity. Example:

    2^n means the nth root of 2. Simple.

    It’s a carrot (quite sure that’s not how you spell it in math but that’s how it’s pronounced. Your use it when you talk about powers. I.e. x^2 You’d read that as “x to the second power”

    In formal mathematics, it doesn't mean anything. However, when it comes to text-based response areas like under yahoo or other places, it gets used to show exponentiation. The reason is that it isn't always convenient to use a superscript
