Would the nuclear weapon have been invented had Einstein not figured out E=MC2?

Did they cotton onto it being possible or would they have without this understanding ?

    If Einstein didn't figure it out, someone else would have.

    Same with evolution and Darwin.

    Yes, it would. The fact is that science progresses based on previous knowledge and understanding, and that the theory of relativity was due to come up, if not by Einstein, then by someone else, if not by 1915, then perhaps a few years later. FYI, Einstein relied on the Lorentz transformations to establish his general relativity theory. Science is like sport records; if someone does not break the record, then next year someone else would.
