what is the difference between hispanic and latino in Usa?

and who are the Hispanos???? For example in New Mexico there are people of spanish ancestry (not mestizos) from spanish colonists called hispanos. thank you

    Hispanic only refers to Spanish speakers. Latinos can include Italian and Portuguese speakers too.

    It is all rather confused and people tend to call themselves either and both depending on their own personal preference.

    Hispanic means you have Spanish as (not necessarily only) native language.

    Latino means having a lationamerican background.

    Spaniards are hispanic but not latino

    Brazilians are Latino but not hispanic

    and then there's newspeak-artists pretending they are the same thing

    Hispanic is generally from Mexico, and Latino is generally from Spain. At least that’s the way I understand it
